What a day to be a Madridista! The UEFA Champions League delivered a blockbuster on Wednesday night as PSG and Real Madrid clashed in the Santiago Bernabéu for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Los Blancos had lost the 1st leg in Paris which saw PSG coming into this fixture with great confidence and a 1-0 advantage. However, Real Madrid, Santiago Bernabeu and Champions League nights are the perfect recipe for a comeback. The Real Madrid Ultras had created an unbelievable atmosphere outside the stadium which definitely would've been quite intimidating for the Paris Giants.
It was an end to end game in 1st half with both the teams on their front foot. Madrid came out attacking and pressing as soon as the match started but PSG was able to soak it up and play on the counter. Both the teams were trying to impose themselves on each other but it was the Parisians who dominated the 1st half and ended up scoring a goal to further increase their chances. It seemed like Mbappé wanted to prove his worth in front of Madridistas and show them that they very well need him. And, to some extent, he did that by scoring a goal in the first half. Neymar came up with the assist as he released Mbappé down the left flank with a delicious through pass. Mbappé drove into the box and squared up Militão before blasting his effort into the bottom-left corner. A clinical finish from Mbappé to give his side a 1-0 lead. To be honest, I thought there was no coming back from there but, I guess, you can never write off Real Madrid.
Los Blancos came out in the second half with great enthusiasm and determination. Credit to Ancelotti as he made 2 early substitutions which changed the whole game. Camavinga and Rodrygo came in for Kroos and Asensio respectively in the 57th minute. After that, it was all about Madrid and their workrate. The superstar trio of Messi, Neymar and Mbappé went missing in the second half as Madrid dominated possession and refused to give any breathing space to PSG.
Ultimately, it was Donnarumma who handed Madrid a lifeline in the 61st minute as Benzema got on the scoresheet to bring the scoreline to 1-1. Donnarumma received a backpass from Verratti and hung on to it for far too long. Benzema was there to close him down and the loose ball landed in front of Vinicius. The Brazilian passed the ball to Benzema who placed his effort into the bottom left corner. The comeback was on!
Madrid scored another goal just 15 minutes later as Benzema got his brace. This time it was Modrić who decided to go beast mode as he surged through the PSG midfield before offloading Vinicius down the left flank. Vinicius, however, took too long to decide to shoot and was forced to pass the ball back to Modrić. The Croatian then threaded the needle to release Benzema in the box and the Frenchman made no mistake to bring his side level on aggregate.
The score was 2-1 and PSG had started to crumble. Just 2 minutes after his second goal, Karim Benzema got his hattrick to put his side in the lead. PSG was cut open as Vinicius found space in the final third. He tried to cut inside but Marquinhos was there to cut him off. However, in doing so, he passed the ball straight away to Benzema who was just on the edge of the box. Benzema took his shot first time with the outside of his right foot and found the back of the net with unreal precision.
Madrid won the tie in Santiago Bernabéu with a score of 3-2 on aggregate. Real Madrid showed Mbappé that he needs them much more than they need him. I'm absolutely lost for words for Karim Benzema and Luka Modrić. What these guys have done and continue to do for this club is extraordinary. As for PSG, it's a complete and utter failure of their project.
Los Blancos showed why they are the heritage of club football. They showed that money can't win you trophies. Ultimately, it's Real Madrid who advances to the next stage of the Champions League against all odds while PSG is left humiliated and embarrassed.
